Registered users of SLICK Terminal are granted permission to use READ
without additional payment or separate registration. Non SLICK users
are required to pay a one time registration fee of Five Dollars.
Why READ, you ask? Because, READ is uncomplicated, simple and very
easy to operate. READ is intended as a support utility for SLICK
Terminal's documentation file. In this regard, to read the SLICK.DOC
file, you need only type READ (by itself) at the DOS prompt. However,
READ can also be used to view any standard ascii text file. As long
as both READ and the document file are located in a directory which
has been assigned to a dos PATH statement (normally done via the
autoexec.bat file), it does not matter where you are (at the time you
call READ) to run the utility. Furthermore, since READ searches the
PATH in the COMSPEC environment to locate the desired text file, READ
determines the correct dos path on its own in order to grab and load
the text file you wish to view. This eliminates having to type extra
path statements appended to the file name. So, instead of typing at
the prompt > "READ C:\WP\DOC\LETTERS\MOM.TXT", you need only type
"READ MOM.TXT".
READ has a very basic menu appearing on line 25 of your monitor. You
have all the essentials to easily scroll through a text file with the
following menu keys:
<PgUp> <PgDn> <Arrow Up> <Arrow Dn> <Home> <End> <Alt-P LTP1:> <Esc Exits>
READ will start by displaying the first 24 lines of the file and
then wait for your next instruction. If you desire a hard copy and
have a line printer connected to LPT1:, (parallel port 1, 378) you
can press the Alt and P keys. This will cause the entire file to be
sent to your printer. Should the printer be off line or disconnected,
the program will terminate with the appropriate "printer off line"
message.
To keep coding to a minimum, and because there are already many super
sophisticated read utilities already out there, READ was not coded to
operate on text files in excess of 64k.
HINT:
By default, running with no parameter on the command line,
READ looks for a text file called SLICK.DOC anywhere in the
pre defined dos path. Therefore you could easily change the name of
any ascii text file to SLICK.DOC in order to make it just a little
easier to read. This could be helpful on text files that you are
required to scan on a regular basis.
